Your Role at Baxter

The Hayward Engineering Leader is responsible for providing plant manufacturing capacity, process automation and optimization, and engineering support for the manufacturing of Advanced Surgery products at the Hayward Manufacturing Facility. Responsible for the day-to-day activities of site facility and maintenance, engineering, utility critical systems and EHSS responsibilities. Create and manage a department vision that aligns with the organization's vision or strategic plan. Provides leadership for the managers, engineers, supervisors, and technicians within the sites Engineering, Facilities and Maintenance and EHSS organizations. 

Based on significant technical expertise, reviews and approves complex design concepts and provides general direction to technical staff while creating a strategy and structure to improve asset availability for the plant. Utilizes solid understanding of theories and practices of a variety of disciplines to manage complex projects or programs within boundaries of quality, time, and budget. Fosters an environment of creativity and innovation in completing departmental responsibilities and goals. Exhibits creativity and innovation in completing divisional and cross-functional/business unit responsibilities.

The Hayward Engineering leader is acknowledged outside of business unit or division for input on programs within the Medical Products and Therapies (MPT) and Advanced Surgery organizations.

What you'll be doing

  • Lead the Engineering, Facilities and Maintenance and EHSS teams by prioritizing projects, providing technical guidance, establishing, evaluating, and reviewing performance goals and objectives for each subordinate.

  • Lead the development and integration of project strategies which may cross several disciplines; evaluate alternatives against agreed criteria. With the team, select strategies and appropriate level of risk and understand full range of implications across the system.

  • Responsible for owning the site wide capital plan ensuring adherence to execution and spend limits/controls.

  • Establish and control capital and operating budgets for the department.

  • Drive focus and provide support for routine, preventive, and predictive maintenance activities.

  • Provides leadership for all things future in terms of equipment reliability.  Areas of responsibility include reliability engineering, predictive maintenance, planning and scheduling, and appropriate technical training of maintenance and engineering staff.

  • Create and implement a proactive site wide reliability system to improve maintenance metrics, personnel knowledge, and skill sets, ultimately increasing asset availability. Required to influence site managers/stakeholders to comply with the reliability program and achieve set goals by using broad knowledge and experience in cross-functional activities.

  • Maintain performance indicators in accordance with the established goals. Such as: OEE, energy, water consumption, efficiency in the implementation of projects, among others.

  • Responsible for all aspects of the design, construction, modification and maintenance of the building, critical systems, cleaning and housekeeping, maintenance of support equipment, electromechanical installations, among others.

  • Manage the design, installation and start-up of new equipment and systems.

  • Provides strategic planning leadership by setting strategies and priorities based upon anticipation and application of industry trends and emerging technologies.

  • Develop and implement new products/processes requiring development of technologies.

  • Responsible for oversight and implementation of Corporate and plant specific EHS&S objectives, strategy, policies, and procedures.

  • Indirect supervision of EHS&S Staff (Continue direct reporting relationship into Corporate EHS&S).

  • Manage, identify, hire, develop and recognize technical staff; Create and maintain employee and organizational development; as well as HR plans which meet business needs.

  • Apply specialized knowledge in a creative way to a broad range of difficult problems while developing a professional and self-directed team.

  • Review and analyze proposals to determine if benefits derived and possible applications justify expenditures. Approve and submit proposal to Sr. Management. Responsible for preparation of project cost estimates up to multi-million dollar range. Manages and forecasts all project expenditures and cost tracking.

  • Maximize the effectiveness of internal and external resources (business unit and cross-business unit) to meet business objectives.

  • Responsible for management of the site Machine Shop and Project Shop resources and responsibilities.

  • Responsible for policy setting and defining procedures for the staff in accomplishing and documenting projects. Assist in the development of overall engineering department policy.

  • Responsible for supporting, updating and executing protocols and documentation (engineering change requests, system change forms, etc.) in order to secure project release. Develop staff members to assume technical approver role.

  • Sustain a clean and safe work area using 6S principles

  • Learn, understand and apply rigorous quality standards, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and Current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP)

  • Drive Engagement in the team through modeling Leadership Behaviors:

    • Communication – actively keep work group informed.  Own the message and speak with one voice that supports and aligns with site leadership.

    • Recognition – regularly acknowledge and celebrate the achievements, contributions and efforts from the team.

    • Feedback – provide positive coaching and development of team members and consistently manage performance and behavior issues with dignity and respect.

    • Enabling Success – ensure team members have what they need to be successful on a daily basis, and in their career aspirations.

What you'll bring

  • Bachelor of Science (BS) in relevant Engineering discipline from an accredited institution, MS preferred.

  • 10+ years’ experience in a related technical/engineering field.

  • Must be well versed in engineering disciplines (e.g. fluid flow, thermodynamics, heat transfer, static's and dynamics, engineering materials). Must possess knowledge of related disciplines.

  • Must possess strong knowledge of maintenance management (e.g. technical knowledge, maintenance metrics and computerized maintenance management systems) and solid knowledge of related disciplines.

  • Knowledge of GMPs, FDA guidelines, purchasing practices and process validation.

  • Ability to manage multiple cross-functional teams simultaneously.

  • Ability to design and influence outside of immediate scope of responsibility.

  • Must be self-motivated, have good interpersonal skills, capable of analyzing and solving complex problems through innovative thought and experience.

  • Maintain industry contacts and be involved in industry interest groups.

  • Proven track record of management/leadership effectiveness.

  • Understand verbal and written safety and quality instructions and read and comprehend written work instructions including words and drawings.

  • Must have basic English written and oral communication skills adequate to communicate with other team members.

We understand compensation is an important factor as you consider the next step in your career. At Baxter, we are committed to equitable pay for all employees, and we strive to be more transparent with our pay practices. The estimated base salary for this position is $144,000 - $198,000 annually. The estimated range is meant to reflect an anticipated salary range for the position. We may pay more or less than of the anticipated range based upon market data and other factors, all of which are subject to change. Individual pay is based on upon location, skills and expertise, experience, and other relevant factors. This position may also be eligible for discretionary bonuses and long-term incentive.
