Your role at Baxter

As a Sr. Paralegal you will research law, investigate facts and prepare documents to assist the Director of Legal (Canada) and other partners. You will resolve various issues and accomplish projects while appropriately seeking attorney review and approval. Perform other tasks, including legal administration, as advised. Draft, review, amend, negotiate and finalize a variety contracts, including RFP bids and responses, and legal correspondence. Respond to and resolve contract compliance-related inquiries and routine legal questions under the direction of the Director of Legal (Canada).

What you'll be doing

  • Assist in resolving routine legal issues raised by the other party to agreements i.e. product purchase and provincial health authorities, supply, clinical/research study, confidentiality, professional services, software licensing, consumer marketing, manufacturing, purchasing and supplier management, transportation, equipment rental/leasing, and RFPs responses.

  • Support the Director of Legal (Canada) with day-to-day work load, including advising on a wide range of legal issues and commercial activities

  • Participate in special projects as the need arises

  • Work with the contracts team to ensure that contracts meet Baxter’s legal standards.

  • Work independently on a wide variety of contracts related to the various Baxter business units in Canada

  • Interact across all levels with internal clients and external parties using discretion and independent judgment on contracts and other issues

  • Develop and update templates used by Baxter for routine agreements

  • Perform internet-based research on a wide range of legal issues in areas such as corporate law, intellectual property, privacy, procurement, ethics and compliance, etc.

What you'll bring

  • Paralegal or Law Clerk diploma - Licensed Paralegal

  • Minimum 10 years experience drafting, reviewing and negotiating a variety of general business contracts and legal correspondence

  • 10+ years experience working as a paralegal or law clerk in a corporate law environment

  • Experience and/or education in the healthcare industry privacy, competition law

  • Experience working with French - fluency in French an asset

  • Proficient in legal research and thorough knowledge of legal resources and databases

  • Excellent oral/written communication, organization/analytical and interpersonal skills

  • Strong software database and internet search skills and project management abilities

  • Ability to multi-task, effectively prioritize, collect and analyze information, and meet deadlines in a timely manner

  • Be a self-starter with the ability to take initiative to drive projects to completion, including handling follow-up matters; gathering information; collating, summarizing and organizing information; and be able to work with minimal supervision

  • Attention to detail

  • Ability to collaborate and work with all types of individuals at all levels, internal and external, including attorneys, paralegals, business contacts and third party attorneys
