Summary:

Responsible for overseeing all internal and/or external communications relevant topics in the business units in Western Europe, and for supporting local initiatives across the cluster for all Business Units. Drives the support of the marketing teams in the development of creative communication and influencing strategies, key messages and tactical plans to promote current and future business plans in Western Europe (EMEA). Implementing PR and marketing communication programs and campaigns in close collaboration with the regional BU marketing and medical teams, coordinating MarComm/Digital Marketing campaigns and leveraging services from the Digital Marketing CoE and external agencies. Responsible for regional BU and Cluster alignment with the Meetings & Events CoE for digital, internal and external meetings and events. Exerts strong influence through strategic and executional communication advice to regional marketing and medical teams to achieve short- and longer-term business goals. Critical to the role is the ability to articulate solid communications strategies, to turn complex scientific and technical information into clear messages in collaboration with the regional teams, and to drive effective implementation of strategically relevant communication activities across social and traditional media. Acts as a core member of issues & crisis management teams to protect and maintain Baxter’s reputation. Coordinates CSR activities including charitable donations. Supports reinforcing a culture of Ethics & Compliance.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Digital Marketing / Marketing Communications coordination for the BUs : PSS & GSS - Turn marketing strategy and product offering into a communications strategy with a clear, concise, consistent, appealing and differentiated message to internal and external audiences. Work with marketing and medical teams to activate a mix of channels to meet the sales objectives. After contributing to the strategic planning, partner with the BUs leadership team to plan the campaigns by finalizing the creative brief, coordinating its finalization with the Digital Marketing CoE, supervising execution with vendor Internal/External Agency. Act as strategic advisor for country marcomms campaigns.

  • Strategic Communication Plan Development - Participate in the development and assessment of the business strategy to identify communication opportunities and needs.  Develop communication plans and strategies for more complex business issues.  Partner with key functional and business experts and influence them to act proactively in managing issues.  Assess changing circumstances in order provide appropriate communication support and counsel and drive organization change as appropriate. Build credibility for the communication function with key business partners and ensure alignment with key constituencies. Manage budget in the context of the overall communications budget available.

  • Corporate and BUs (PSS & GSS) specific messaging and branding- The owner of corporate messaging and BUs specific branding and therapy messaging. Align and integrate message platforms company-wide, and ensure messages are supportive across product lines/businesses where there are connections. Ensure consistency, factual correctness and credibility of the messages. Proactively and strategically position messaging that have long-term impact for the organization. Opportunistically apply data to reinforce messages.

  • Writing/Editing- Write consistently in an influential, factually correct, impactful and memorable style. Connect messages across vehicles to influence broader opportunities and ensure consistency and reinforcement of critical messages – “sees the big picture”. Edit for style, consistency and fluidity across the organization. Drive and deliver social media content for use across the region and within the cluster. Ensure validation of messages.

  • Technology/Channel Application - Bring new information and best practices to the organization. Continuously assess overall opportunities and impact for uses of new technology. Manage cost benefit analysis to determine the best use of investment dollars.

  • Media RelationsEnsure local alignment with global position statements on critical business issues. Assist senior BUs and Cluster management on external stakeholder communications. Identify and pursue proactive opportunities to enhance Baxter’s image in the media at the senior executive level and across the company. Develop strategies and ensure external media issues and opportunities are surfaced for the organization and leveraged for Baxter.  Create an expectation and environment that fosters cultural sensitivity. Balance the diverse interests and viewpoints of various stakeholders. Act as a spokesperson for the BUs/Cluster.

  • Advocacy DevelopmentBuild strong advocate networks. Influence other parts of the organization to leverage advocate relationships. Continuously scan the environment to identify new, opportunistic relationships. Independently manage key advocate relationships.

  • Issues and Crisis ManagementProactively provides timely direction, guidance and support to the BUs and applicable country cluster on the communication management of issues and crisis management. Responsible for internal messaging alignment and approval. Spokesperson in the cluster and for the applicable BUs in the region. Works with all communications team colleagues to ensure optimal responses at country level in local language.

  • Vendor/Agency Management - Establish scope of the project with the vendor/agency. Provide strategic and financial framework for vendor/agency relationships. Negotiate most competitive financial agreement and terms with agency/vendor and timelines. Anticipate and/or resolve issues/conflicts, as needed.

Qualifications:

  • Strong critical and strategic thinking applied in a clear communication strategy, key messages and tactical plans in close collaboration with marketing and medical teams. Proven ability to align strategically relevant messaging across many therapy areas within a business unit and to implement them consistently.

  • Ability to quickly catch opportunities and change course if needed, a curious and active partner in our diverse teams, who has the maturity to constructively challenge colleagues and management.

  • Ability to identify and analyze business and audience needs to deliver messages via the most appropriate mix of media and channels. Ability to leverage external relationships with KOLs and patient advocacy groups to reinforce messages and promote long term relationships with key external stakeholders.

  • Excellent writing skills with proven experience to turn complex information into clear, concise and compelling materials under time pressure. English and relevant country and cluster languages.

  • Highly developed project management and prioritization skills.

  • Strong capability to envision and implement change and an eye for the big picture. An ability to lead other people (who are not direct reports), to coach, develop and guide others in communications, including senior management.

  • Articulate spokesperson with demonstrated ability to manage media relationships.

  • Social skills that strengthen and encourage the diversity of culture, languages, expertise and levels in a global organization.

  • Highly motivated self-starter with strong problem-solving skills.

  • Advocate of ethics and compliance, striving to do things right the first time.

  • Ability to assess capabilities to meet needs and negotiate/manage appropriate agreements with outside vendors or agencies.

  • Interviewing/Reporting - Conduct one-on-one or group interviews.  Bring in broad knowledge to questioning. Recognize key issues by active listening and critical thinking and discern appropriate action plans in real time based on information obtained. Distill complex data and facts. Ability to prepare and probe for information and apply reporting and facilitation techniques.
