Summary of Responsibilities

The 4th Class Operating Engineer maintains and repairs sterilizer vessels, coordinates large repairs, and ensures efficient sterilizer operation at Baxter Alliston.

Essential duties and responsibilities

Time Spent

Major Responsibilities / Activities

Weekly and Annual preventative maintenance (PM) checks Including but not limited to:

  • Checking for leaks on air, water, and steam lines/valves
  • Checking for accurate actuator operation
  • Checking door gasket condition
  • Checking alarm functionality of vessels
  • Hydrostatic testing heat exchangers
  • Keeping a log of safety valves
  • Coordinating dye pen testing of vessels
  • All other tasks required by Baxter

Repairs/maintenance

  • Repair leaks on air, water, and steam lines
  • Greasing pumps and doors as needed
  • Cleaning of sterilizer nozzles
  • Cleaning sump pits
  • Replacing strainer basket screens
  • Changing safety valves as required
  • Changing door gaskets
  • Changing steam bleeders/mufflers
  • Actuator and valve repair/replacements
  • Gasket changes on air, water, and steam lines
  • Oil changes for doors
  • Alarm troubleshooting
  • All other tasks required by Baxter

Aid in the execution of projects:

  • Generate CWR’s as required (Critical Work Request)
  • Generate Work orders as required in Maximo
  • Coordinate repairs with external contractors and Engineers
  • Maintain process supply inventories and generate Requisitions & PO’s as required
  • Follow up with suppliers on equipment repair status

Maintain area and equipment as required:

  • Clean instrumentation panels, sterilizer vessels, and floor areas
  • Perform general housekeeping duties including painting and 6S

Education/Experience

Required:

  • Successful completion of High School Diploma or GED or equivalent experience
  • Dedication to acquiring a 4th class operating engineer certificate

Preferred:

  • 4th or 3rd class operating engineer certificate

Preferred:

  • Post-secondary degree in Engineering or Science

Type of Experience

Required:

  • Fast-paced environment
  • Mechanically inclined
  • Strong communication skills

Preferred:

  • Manufacturing/Quality experience in a GMP environment
  • Experience in the food or manufacturing industry
  • Pipe threading experience
  • Valve repair experience
  • Actuator repair experience
  • Rigging heavy equipment experience
  • Strengths in MS Office (Word/Excel/PowerPoint/Access/Visio) and AutoCAD software

Years of Experience

Required:

  • 1-3 years

Preferred:

  • 3+ years

Additional Skills / Special Training / Technical Skills Required

Required:

  • Flexibility to provide coverage days, nights, and weekends depending on the situation
  • Apply Baxter’s Shared Commitments
  • Proven ability to be proactive and self-motivated on the job and to work with minimal supervision
  • Demonstrated ability to detail data accurately according to CA GPP 80
  • Must have the ability to comprehend Baxter Specifications/SOP’s and determine appropriate corrective actions
  • Demonstrated basic level proficiency with the following computer applications: (Maximo, Coupa, Tcu)
  • Sterilization is a key step in manufacturing and therefore significant overtime may be required in this position. Ability to support mandatory Production Saturdays
  • Equipment and tools required are: Steam sterilizers with associated control panels; pneumatic wrench, steel ramps, simple hand tools, safety shoes, glasses, and hearing protection

Decisions:

  • Determine failure severity level and advance through appropriate channels when needed
  • Determine appropriate actions to take and complete documentation if criteria are not met
  • Must be able to comprehend specifications & SOP’s

Challenges:

  • Troubleshooting problems with equipment
  • Ability to determine appropriate corrective actions
  • Ability to determine accurate documentation channels
  • Sterilization is a key step in manufacturing and therefore significant overtime may be required in this position
  • Working conditions: subjected to high temperatures, wet floor, loud noise
