Research Associate III - Extractables and Leachables

The primary purpose of this position is to provide analytical and technical support for Extractables and Leachables (E&L) projects, namely to design and to perform E&L testing, studies and assessments that address the risk associated with patient exposure to leachables originating from materials used to manufacture, package and deliver either new or existing products.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Contribute to state-of-the-art chemical characterization studies and extractables & leachables assessments for devices/drug products using a range of analytical instrumentation including GC/MS and LC/MS.  
  • Independently execute instrumental sample analysis.
  • With SME input, independently author and contribute to experimental protocols and author technical reports.  
  • Independently process and interpret analytical data.
  • Interfaces regularly with and provides technical expertise to the business units, and approved outside contract organizations on issues relating to new product research, product support activities, product complaints, safety assessment studies, pre-clinical evaluations and testing protocols.
  • Independently prepares protocols detailing experimental designs then utilize appropriate analytical methodologies, as required to evaluate test and control articles. 
  • Independently uses chromatographic and spectroscopic techniques to support product development and manufacturing needs. Is proficient in GC/MS and/or LC/MS data acquisition and can perform data interpretation of limited complexity.
  • Assumes responsibility for timely and effective completion of projects in accordance with the needs of the group, customer requirements and corporate priorities.

Education and/or Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a scientific discipline (such as Analytical or Organic chemistry) with 5+ years, MS with at least 3+ years, or PhD with 0-1+ years’ experience in relevant discipline.
  • Proficiency in the general area of material/product compatibility assessments, specifically related to extractable/leachables
  • Must have knowledge and understanding of GxP and related regulations and guidance.
  • Familiar with sample preparation techniques, including liquid-liquid and solid phase extraction.
  • Able to perform chromatographic method development and  validations.
  • Must be well-versed in analytical chemistry, spectroscopy, impurity quantitation and characterization and possess knowledge in related disciplines.
  • Demonstrated ability to critically interpret chromatographic and complex spectroscopic data.
