Baxter is on a mission to modernize our global manufacturing locations through the implementation of advanced automation and Industry 4.0 tools. These tools are designed to improve our Operations’ productivity goals and enable manufacturing sites to be smarter and leaner.

The Principal Engineer is a critical role responsible for advancing and sustaining digital manufacturing and Industry 4.0 initiatives for Baxter’s Americas manufacturing network.

The successful candidate will be a thought process leader, possess exceptional customer engagement and strong program management skills, a passion for data, and a quest for continuous improvement. Knowledge of various leading Industry 4.0 tools such as IoT platforms, edge computing, augmented reality / virtual reality, artificial intelligence/machine learning, computer vision, and emerging technologies is a key requirement. The candidate will bring excitement and energy for innovation, and a passion for their work and the impact it has on saving and sustaining the lives of patients.

What you'll be doing

  • Partner with business, commercial, and IT leaders to drive progress for digital transformation initiatives.
  • Strong partnership with regional and local site digital teams to advance/accelerate key strategic initiatives to create value in the manufacturing sites.
  • Perform site assessments from an Infrastructure standpoint and organizational readiness and devise transformation plans in partnership with the regional and local site leadership team.
  • Build, lead and mentor digital transformation team at local sites.
  • Serve as a Digital Transformation evangelist.
  • Identify use cases to constantly improve operation metrics to attain global benchmarks and become the best in class.
  • Strong program management skills.
  • Drive benefit realization tracking and partner with manufacturing sites to accelerate commitments or address gaps to plan.
  • Qualification and training in formal and systematic methods of program planning, management, and control.
  • Financial understanding of the business value of transformation programs.
  • Effectively work in a matrixed organization structure.
  • Ability to execute to plans while effectively managing risks and opportunities.

What you'll bring

  • 7+ years of experience in leading complex projects in a global manufacturing organization.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering / Computer Science.
  • Solid understanding and demonstrated track record of using open-source programming tools such as Python, OpenCV, Node-RED, etc. is highly desired.
  • Exposure to and understanding of computer vision systems
  • Exposure to and understanding of AI models for computer vision applications
  • Exposure to and understanding of advanced robotics technologies such as autonomous mobile robots (AMRs), automatic guided vehicles (AGVs), and collaborative robots.
  • Exposure to and understanding of PLC programming and architecture such as Allen-Bradley, Siemens, Omron, etc.
  • Exposure to and understanding of manufacturing operations, MES, SCADA, Plant Historian, and data acquisition methods
  • Ability to handle multiple projects and demonstrate effectiveness in task completion, decision-making, empowerment of others, problem-solving, and team leadership
  • Ability to operate in and facilitate cross-functional teams with minimal guidance
  • Ability to organize and present technical information and project plans with minimal assistance

Other requirements:

Business Travel: 20% - 30%

Location: Greater Asheville Area, NC, Opelika AL, or Greater Chicago Area, IL (Flexible)
