As a Mechanical Design Engineer, you will design, develop, and, implement optimized mechanical designs for automated manufacturing equipment constructed internally by Baxter engineering. This equipment is deployed globally to support our manufacturing operations for the production of a variety of Baxter products to help save and sustain the lives of Baxter patients.

This position is located in Round Lake, Illinois but works closely with geographically dispersed teams and operations.

Your team

You will be part of an automation team with both internal design, build & integration capabilities as well as external turn-key partners to fulfill Baxter’s needs for manufacturing equipment and to advance the associated process technology. Our primary focus is on custom equipment required for critical-to-quality product-forming and assembly operations. Standardizing on equipment platforms and core technologies.

Example core operations: RF welding, ultrasonic welding, solvent bonding, impulse sealing, robotic handling/assembly, film/tube cutting, thermal transfer, and hot stamp printing, bag filling, integrated 100% vision, and leak inspections.

What you'll be doing

  • Responsible for mechanical design as part of a cross-functional team that designs, develops, and constructs custom automation for Baxter manufacturing operations.
  • Collaborate with design, engineering, technicians, plant personnel, and external vendors to assure successful design, fabrication, assembly, and functionality of manufacturing equipment.
  • Contribute to a team in defining project schedules, requirements, developing goals, assigning project tasks, and ensuring that the team meets goals.
  • Act independently with minimal direction to conduct smaller approved projects.
  • Contribute to cost estimating of mechanical design portion of capital budget items, track smaller project budgets, monitor and contribute to the spending of budgeted project funds.
  • Provide technical support in developing mechanical assembly and testing equipment.
  • Manage routine small design projects without assistance. Responsible for 3D modeling of sub-assemblies through main machine assembly and associated drawings for manufacturing and assembly.
  • Investigate and analyze customer service problems and design improvement suggestions. Recommend design improvements based on technical knowledge.
  • Up to 10% travel may be required and could include both foreign and domestic locations.

What you'll bring

  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering Technology
  • 1-3 years of related experience.
  • Knowledge of mechanical engineering principles applied to the design and implementation of automated manufacturing equipment.
  • Must know how to effectively manage small projects and direct the activities of a mechanical technician.
  • Able to collaborate and communicate effectively with a larger design team to deliver a sub-system of a larger project.
  • Experienced with mechanical and pneumatic system design for modern manufacturing equipment.
  • Experience with mechanical 3D CAD software, preferably SolidWorks & SolidWorks PDM.
  • Ability to analyze existing mechanical and pneumatic designs for potential improvements/innovations and cost reductions.
  • Analyze and mitigate future machine failure modes for operator safety, risk to product quality, and machine longevity and serviceability.
  • Experience in the mechanical design of automated manufacturing equipment for the healthcare industry is a plus.
  • Able to read, interpret technical drawings, facility layouts, and component manuals/instructions to develop designs for automation.
