The intern will collaborate with a designing surgeon that has a pre-clinical prototype and perform research, but all the work of feasibility and development is ahead of us!
Project:
Gastric Calibration Tube (GCT) is a surgical device to help the surgeon create optimal anatomy of the stomach during sleeve gastrectomy weight-loss surgery. Baxter will design a new device that is placed through a patient’s mouth, passes through the esophagus and into the stomach. The surgeon then leverages the unique design of the GCT to help create a path for a surgical stapler. The portion of the stomach removed is determined by the surgeon using the GCT during surgery. The impact will be having a one of a kind easy-to-use device that improves the sleeve gastrectomy surgical procedure will improve patient outcomes (weight loss, quality of life). This is a new product for Baxter and therefore requires a total “biodesign” approach.
