Baxter offers a robust summer internship program based in the Chicagoland area that provides meaningful work assignments and projects that immerse students in Baxter’s culture designed to provide practical work experience highlighting what an individual would do in a similar full-time role with the ability to make a business impact.  You'll be paired with a mentor, receive support from your manager, and have access to the entire Baxter employee community to ensure your success.  We’ll help you have fun outside of work with outings to sporting events, community service opportunities, networking events with Baxter leaders, and other activities.

The human factors team works with cross-functional teams throughout different phases of the product development lifecycle to evaluate design of user interface, assess use-related risk, and enhance and demonstrate safe and effective use.

An internship with Human Factors team will allow students to get familiar with the general standards and practices on how human factors knowledge is applied in the medical device manufacturing industry. Specifically, the intern will perform Use Related Risk Analyst (URRA) on Baxter products and plan and execute formative studies to evaluate the usability with the intended users and get user feedback to guide the next steps.

Responsibilities:

  • Work with cross-functional program teams to evaluate design concepts and prototypes
  • Communicate HF inputs with the program teams
  • Plan and conduct HF/usability studies to test user interface
  • Assess use-related risk associated with foreseeable use errors
  • Develop Human Factors documentation following the FDS/IEC Standards and Baxter best practice.

Requirements:

Baxter is targeting students with proven academic performance and leadership potential.  Ideal candidates will combine technical and business knowledge with analytical strength and creative problem-solving abilities. 

  • Rising Junior or Senior or 1st year Master’s student pursuing a degree in Human Factors Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Industrial Design, Biomechanical Engineering or Applied Psychology.
  • GPA of 3.0 or above
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated leadership qualities and problem-solving skills
  • Self-starter with ability to work independently
  • Positive attitude, team-oriented, adaptive to change, and collaborative
  • Actively involved in campus or community activities and organizations, preferably in leadership roles
