  • Baxter’s Acute Therapies business is a US$600M+ business globally and is expected to play a major role in Baxter’s growth over the coming years, with significant investments being made in the pipeline/market development

  • The CRRT business represents approximately 90% of the Acute revenue and the market is growing 7% globally. The CRRT business includes CRRT monitors, sets, and solutions

  • CRRT is a type of blood purification therapy used with patients who are experiencing Acute Kidney Injury (AKI). During this therapy, a patient's blood passes through a special filter that removes fluid and uremic toxins, returning clean blood to the body

  • CRRT monitors are the basis for conducting CRRT, therefore the critical component for the success of the Acute business  

Position Overview

  • This rapidly growing team works on new product development/ sustainment of the current Prismaflex and PrisMax product lines and related consumable sets

  • Seeking an experienced Human Factors Engineer with demonstrated/successful results working with multiple engineering disciplines, product development support staff and end users

Critical Responsibilities

  • Partner/collaborate with the HF Lead to support all human factors activities for the Acute Therapies business. Projects may include electro-mechanical platforms, software user interfaces, disposables, and/or solutions.

  • Apply human performance principles, design methodologies, and user research techniques to the design of products/systems. Plan activities in compliance with FDA and other regulatory standards/guidelines. (e.g., FDA human factors guidance, IEC 62366, AAMI HE75).

  • Proactively advocate for user experience, patient safety, and real-world impacts in all project discussions. Encourage use of creative problem-solving techniques during the design/refinement of system/product designs.

  • Gather contextual information to define user groups, use environments, inform workflows, and use scenarios. Identify/prioritize design elements based on their impact on safety, usability, and user experience.

  • Select appropriate evaluation techniques throughout all phases of the product development process to support customer needs identification, concept selection/refinement, requirements development, use-related risk identification, workflow analysis, and formal usability validation with intended users.

  • Lead and/or support the planning/execution of formative and summative studies including creating/managing relationships with vendors for recruitment, creating budgets, developing screeners, defining study goals, and identifying materials required to support studies, working with engineering teams to ensure study materials are ready for evaluation, writing protocols, moderating sessions, adhering to GDP, root cause analysis, etc.

  • Interface with/translate information between a diverse cross functional group, locally/ internationally

  • Collaborate effectively as a critical member of a systems engineering team. Desire to learn CRRT, understand the goals of other engineering disciplines, and cognizant of related processes to ensure project plans synergistically support each other

  • Support remediation work as needed

Key Qualifications/Proficiencies

Required

  • Master’s degree or Ph.D. in a discipline that provided substantive coursework on qualitative research methods and human performance principles (i.e., human factors, cognitive science, experimental psychology, ergonomics, kinesiology, human computer interaction, industrial design, etc.)

  • 7+ yrs. with a masters/6+ yrs. with a PhD applicable professional experience in a role leading the planning and execution of generative and evaluative user research (i.e., as a HFE, UX designer, UX researcher, or another equivalent role).

  • Substantial experience applying design principles to product design (i.e., able to predict and recommend specifically how usability issues can be solved prior to evaluation).

Preferred/Not Required

  • Experience working in a safety-focused industry.

  • 2+ years’ experience working in a medical device engineering organization with expertise applying IEC 62366 to product design and development.

  • Understanding of and experience working within design controls.

The successful candidate for this position will be required to provide his or her COVID-19 vaccination status as a condition to employment, pursuant to OSHA ETS requirements.  If the employee is not vaccinated, then the employee will have to submit to weekly testing, subject to potential religious or medical exemptions.
