About Baxter
Baxter provides a broad portfolio of essential renal and hospital products, including home, acute and in-centre dialysis;
sterile IV solutions; infusion systems and devices; parenteral nutrition; surgery products and anesthetics; and pharmacy
automation, software and services. The company’s global footprint and the critical nature of its products and services
play a key role in expanding access to healthcare in emerging and developed countries. Baxter’s employees worldwide
are building upon the company’s rich heritage of medical breakthroughs to advance the next generation of healthcare
innovations that enable patient care.

This Research Scientist role will consist of the oversight and execution of laboratory studies in support of material characterization, unknown identification, and failure mode analysis for a broad range of pharmaceutical and medical device products. The Research Scientist in this position will apply a suite of microscopic and spectroscopic techniques (FTIR, SEM, EDXS, light microscopy, etc.) to existing products and new product development projects across Baxter’s product portfolio.  Additional activities will include creation of a new lab and oversight of that lab once operational.  This role will also require partnering with internal stakeholders, communicating with global teams for new research directions and results of existing work, and providing technical consultation in areas of subject matter expertise.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Independently plan and execute experimental designs, lead other team members to complete complex study objectives with limited guidance.
• Communicate experimental plans with alignment to strategic objectives, follow up with execution and summary to management and internal partners.  Direct cross-functional studies where appropriate.
• Represent subject matter expertise specifically in the areas of advanced microscopy, imaging, spectroscopy, and surface/particle characterization internally and externally as needed.
• Implement new or improved techniques and procedures.  Develop research outlines for large scientific projects. Apply laboratory skills in the area of expertise to develop new or improved products.
• Maintain knowledge of relevant Quality System Regulations and safety requirements while building knowledge of other regulatory requirements related to R&D (product development, design and safety) to ensure compliance in all research, data collection and reporting activities.

• Bachelor of Science degree with 10 years, Master’s degree with 5-7 years, or Ph.D. with 0-2 years of GxP laboratory experience. Degree in physical science required.
• Writing and computer skills relevant to recording original data as well as creating protocols, reports, and presentations to communicate with partners and team members. The ability to energetically attack a problem and synthesize the results into a clear and logical summary in a timely manner is critical.
• Subject matter expertise in areas associated with microscopy and particle science.  Ability to learn and master new techniques and develop new methods where appropriate.  Understand why a technique is required not just how to do the technique.
• Communication skills to build relationships across functional and geographical boundaries and present technical concepts to technical and non-technical teams.
• Comfort with risk and ambiguity, ability to negotiate critical timelines for analysis in emergency situations.
• Personal responsibility and ownership of analysis and results.
