Job Description
  • Manages and directs the work of lab technicians and laboratory engineers.
  • Develops tactical plans for laboratory testing, budgets for testing equipment/ supplies procurement and maintenance for achieving lab objectives.
  • Performs and directs engineering support activities including, but not limited to; testing, component analysis and measurements, defect tracking, metrics gathering and reporting, and process improvement. This position will be responsible for test protocol creation and execution.
  • Works under the general direction of the Product Development Director, Hardware, Project Manager, or Project Team Leader.
  • Works on assignments requiring considerable judgment and initiative to resolve problems and recommended solutions and delegation of testing resources.
  • Encourages growth of people in developmental opportunities internal to the test lab.
  • Assures all planned studies in support of all phases of the product development lifecycle are completed on time, with appropriate quality, and in compliance with relevant laboratory standards and regulations.
  • Assures all studies comply with the referenced compendia test standards in addition to laboratory control standards.
  • Develops and clarifies complex test plans and test cases based upon requirements, executing both functional and performance based tests.
  • Formally tracks progress of testing or reporting by other members of the team.
  • Develops and manages lab budget and equipment procurement including ongoing lab inventory, program inventory, all laboratory expense and capital.
  • Develops, gathers and reports lab performance and quality metrics.
  • Assure equipment calibration and maintenance is performed on time in support of business and program commitments. Interfaces and directs metrology suppliers to the lab.
  • Assure all internal audits and safety reviews are performed regularly.
  • Generates and reviews quality records generated in the laboratory.
  • Develops and builds test data libraries.
  • Supervises construction of product builds of electro/mechanical and/or disposables products.
  • Spends time with individual contributors to develop knowledge and skills of those contributors.
  • Communicating with internal and external customers regarding requirements, functionality and other design expectations.
  • Assures that the laboratory maintains compliance with all relevant laboratory and safety regulations and best practices.
  • Recommends changes or additions to products that facilitate testing.
  • Understands implications of work and recommends solutions.


  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering and 10+ years of regulated industry experience required.
  • Requires the ability to lead and influence others to achieve results.
  • Proficient at coaching and mentoring multiple areas of specialization.
  • Ability to use advanced technical knowledge to help members of the laboratory staff to troubleshoot problems.
  • Proficient PC skills and the ability to apply these tools to data analysis with high proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Labview, MiniTab, etc.
  • Ability to solve problems under conditions of uncertainty and ambiguity.
  • Knowledge of Design Control regulations, applicable lab safety standards, laboratory regulations, change control requirements, and lifecycle testing.
  • Knowledge of Quality philosophies, principals, methods, tools and standards of testing using statistical rationale.
  • Knowledge of the lifecycle testing and the processes MTBF analysis.
  • Demonstrates advanced skills across multiple areas of specialization.
